Journalism is considered just a way of reporting information, and its influence extends far beyond simply delivering news. The writing and selection and publishing of the news will form how people perceive the world. In many cases, the news doesn’t just describe what happens, it creates what will matter to the audience or becomes what they will think of as real. Each story in the news is a choice. Out of the thousands of things happening in the world every day, a handful of stories make it to the paper or the website. The journalists are always choosing what will be of importance to the viewers. And in that way, the readers will only be aware of those specific subjects and what the journalist thinks is important.
The language used in writing the stories plays a big part in this. How a situation or news story is written can change the way the news is perceived by the audience. The specific wording that you pick, tone and the structure of the story will affect the reader’s response even though no information is added or excluded. That is why it is so important for journalists to focus on writing neutral and clear content. The way in which a journalist writes can have a huge impact on what the readers will conclude from the story. The repetition of certain stories is another thing which will shape the audience’s perception. It will be easier to make it to the point of how the journalist sees the issue. The audience will start seeing the same things over and over again and eventually it will be the normal to them. It happens a lot when we use digital media because the news is being shown to you depending on what you click. It can be very hard for journalists to notice this as it happens so quickly. That is why it is so crucial for students to learn this part.
The speed of news will also form how the people react to what happens. The speed of information is much faster today than it ever was before and it creates a lot of new challenges for journalists. People will read news faster than ever before before everything is properly checked and that can make people come to false conclusions or understand less about the story. It’s important for responsible journalist to slow down and make sure that everyone will understand the news story clearly and be able to read it without confusion. That is why it is so important for us as journalism students to learn and understand how journalists shape the readers perception. We will learn not just how to report but how it affects us. This will help us to learn the responsibility of a journalist through hands-on. We are teaching ourselves what the responsibility is in journalism and it also shows that reporting is both skill and influence. To summarize, journalism doesn’t only tell us what will happen but it also helps us to see the world around us. It is not just reporting but it is also a part of journalism which needs our full attention and care so that we can make sure that everything will be correct and fair.
